After a decade, “Double Punctum” makes a much-anticipated return to the stage. Presented by Pentas Project Theatre Production and directed by the visionary Loh Kok Man, the performance reimagines its acclaimed work, “White Paper,” through a compelling dance-theatre hybrid inspired by Pam Lim’s photography. Featuring the original dancers, Ming Low and Wong Jyh Shyong, this artistic reunion will take place over five shows from 19 to 22 December 2024 at Pentas 2, Kuala Lumpur Performing Arts Centre (klpac).

A Journey from Lens to Stage

The roots of “Double Punctum” trace back to the photography of Pam Lim and William Mok, who captured the nuanced beauty of nature during trips to China’s Xia Pu and Jiuzhaigou. Inspired by the interplay of stillness and motion observed through the lens, director Loh Kok Man and dancer Ming Low were invited to Jiuzhaigou to delve deeper into this theme. Together, they transformed the striking imagery into a groundbreaking 2013 performance that layered the puncta—or emotional pricks—of photographs onto the movements of dancers.

The original production featured two works, “Sand” and “White Paper,” with Wong Jyh Shyong earning Best Dancer at the 11th BOH Cameronian Arts Awards for his powerful performance. A decade later, “White Paper” has been restructured and refined, drawing upon time’s passage to bring new meaning and depth.

The Collision of Emotion and Art

Guided by Roland Barthes’ concept of the “punctum,” where a single point in a photograph stirs deep emotional memories, this revived production reflects on the collisions between internal and external, black and white, stillness and motion. Photography and dance each evoke their own form of punctum: the former through frozen moments and the latter through emotional flow. “Double Punctum” invites audiences to witness these art forms intersect, creating fresh sparks of meaning.

A Team of Artistic Visionaries

With original music by Ng Chor Guan, stage design by Pam Lim, lighting by Loh Kok Man, and costumes by Quito Neng, this revival is a culmination of interdisciplinary creativity. The performance embodies the scars of time and space, brought to life by the seasoned bodies of Ming Low and Wong Jyh Shyong as they engage in a renewed dialogue of movement and emotion.
