This holiday season, music lovers are in for a treat with two unique performances at The Kuala Lumpur Performing Arts Centre (klpac) that offer a perfect blend of nature’s wonders and festive cheer. Kicking off the celebrations will be A Dash of Nature: Earth, Sky, and the Life Within, presented by The klpac Symphonic Band on 16–17 November 2024, followed by A Christmas Playlist with The klpac String Orchestra from 13–15 December 2024.
A Musical Tribute to Nature
Under the direction of Cheryl Mah, Resident Conductor and Music Director, The klpac Symphonic Band will bring to life the beauty of the natural world in A Dash of Nature: Earth, Sky, and the Life Within. This tranquil and immersive programme invites audiences to experience the wonders of Earth through music, with a special focus on the sky, the land, and the vibrant life that fills it.
The concert will feature compositions by internationally renowned composers from Japan and the US, including Tyler S. Grant, Takamasa Sakai, Scott Watson, and Hayato Hirose. Highlights include Starry Night, a celestial journey under the night sky; Aesop’s Fables, a musical depiction of timeless stories; The Elm Tree, a serene piece that evokes the tranquility of nature; and Rock Music by Alex Shapiro, a fusion of acoustic and electronic sounds paired with natural soundscapes.
In a special moment for Malaysian composers, the band will also perform the world premiere of three new works created by up-and-coming talents through Rondo Production’s Emerging Composers Initiative 2024, supported by ABRSM. These compositions, crafted by Melody Yeo, Lawrence Chiu, and Elson Kwong, explore the ocean’s depths, the mysterious beauty of forests at night, and the sacred mountains of Borneo.
Also featured is Yeo Chow Shern’s Bunga Raya March, a lively tribute to Malaysia’s national flower, inspired by local folk music traditions.
A Christmas Celebration to Remember
As December approaches, The klpac String Orchestra will usher in the festive season with A Christmas Playlist, under the baton of Music Director Andrea Sim. This holiday concert brings a mix of classic Christmas carols and modern favourites, promising to fill the air with joy and holiday spirit.
The performance will include beloved Christmas hits such as O Holy Night, Santa Claus is Coming to Town, Let It Snow, and All I Want for Christmas Is You. Adding to the festive atmosphere, four talented guest vocalists—Loh Wai Sze, Shreya Debiprasad Ghoshal, Duncan Chen Da Ken, and Carmen Tan Wei Wern—will perform cherished Christmas songs, including White Christmas, The Christmas Song, and a specially arranged Christmas Medley by Malaysian composer Yeo Chow Shern.
