I’m Syed Shahril Anuar, and I’ve been the chief of the fire station in Subang Jaya for six years. My journey as a firefighter started almost 18 years ago, and it has been a path filled with challenges, growth, and strong connections with both my family and community. This is my story.

The Challenge

Being a firefighter isn’t just about putting out fires; it’s about facing tough situations and leading with responsibility. The risks we face are high, and every day brings new challenges. As the leader of my team, it’s my job to make sure we are always ready to help, whether it’s a fire, a road accident, or even a suicide attempt. The stakes are high, but this is what I’m committed to.

My Journey

I began my career with the Fire Department in 2006, first working in Melaka’s enforcement division. It was my first taste of the real-life challenges firefighters face, and it was intense. I remember one of my early experiences—a fire that had engulfed a residential area. The heat was overwhelming, and the smoke was so thick you could barely see a few feet ahead. But the most challenging part was hearing the cries of people trapped inside their homes. We managed to save lives that day, but the memory of that fire stayed with me. It was a reminder of why I chose this path.

After gaining experience in Melaka, I moved to Putrajaya, where I became a training officer. There, I spent six years teaching new recruits the skills and knowledge they would need to face the same dangers I had. Training others was a fulfilling experience because I was passing on the wisdom and lessons I had learned on the job. I wanted to make sure that these new firefighters were not only skilled but also mentally prepared for the challenges ahead.

In 2018, I was given the responsibility of leading the Subang Jaya fire station. The trust placed in me to lead such a dedicated team was humbling. Over the years, my team and I have saved countless lives, not just from fires but from accidents, hazardous situations, and even animal rescues. Each call we receive is a chance to make a difference, and every life saved is a victory.

A Mentor’s Guidance

During my time at the fire academy, Akademi Bomba dan Penyelamat Malaysia, I met my commander, Datuk Khirudin. He wasn’t just a leader; he became a mentor and protector who shaped the firefighter and leader I am today. He taught me the importance of leadership, responsibility, and resilience. His guidance during my early years was invaluable, and it’s something I carry with me every day.

I remember one particularly tough time in my career when we were facing multiple emergencies back-to-back. There was a major fire, followed by a road accident, and then a call about a suicide attempt—all within the span of 24 hours. I was exhausted, physically and mentally, and I felt like I was reaching my limit. I called Datuk Khirudin, seeking his advice. He reminded me, “No matter what happens, don’t let it bring you down. Keep moving forward.” His words gave me the strength to push through that difficult time, and it’s advice I still follow today.

The Importance of Hygiene

As the chief of the Subang Jaya fire station, I face big responsibilities every day. But it’s not just about leading my team; it’s also about keeping things clean and safe. Every time we return from a fire or emergency, our first priority is to cleanse ourselves thoroughly. This is where Dettol products play a crucial role. We use our usual trusted brand Dettol’s disinfectant liquid, sprays, handwash and hand sanitizers to ensure that we are free from germs and contaminants.

Our protective gear, fire trucks, and even our own bodies need to be clean and safe, and Dettol helps us maintain that crucial hygiene standard.

Keeping ourselves and our equipment clean is not just a routine; it’s a matter of life and death. We need to be ready for the next emergency, and we cannot afford to carry any harmful bacteria or viruses from one scene to another. That’s why hygiene is so important in our line of work. We rely on Dettol to provide us with the protection we need, ensuring that we are always prepared to face the next challenge without putting ourselves or others at risk.

Balancing Work and Family

The importance of hygiene isn’t just for work; it’s also for home. When I come back, my wife makes sure I’m clean and safe. She insists that I use Dettol’s handwash and wipes before I interact with our daughters.

Her care for hygiene protects our family, just as I protect the community. This routine isn’t just about being clean; it’s her way of ensuring that I am ready for the next emergency without bringing any harm home.

Balancing the demands of being a firefighter with the responsibilities of family life is challenging. My wife and two daughters are my biggest supporters. They understand the risks and sacrifices that come with my job. They know that I might have to leave suddenly, even during family outings, because duty calls. Their support gives me the strength to face these challenges head-on.

I met my wife while we were studying at Universiti Teknologi MARA. We were in the same class, and though we didn’t have feelings for each other at first, our friendship grew into something deeper. After graduation, we decided to get married, and she has been my rock ever since. She understands the demands of my job and the unpredictability of my schedule. She takes care of our home and our daughters, allowing me to focus on my duties without worry.

One of the most touching moments in my life was when my wife and daughters surprised me on my birthday at the fire station. They brought a cake, and we celebrated together with my team. It was a simple gesture, but it meant the world to me. It reminded me that even in this demanding job, I have a family that loves and supports me.

The Reality of a Firefighter’s Life

The phrase “Pergi itu tentu, Balik belum tentu” is one that all firefighters understand deeply. It means that while we know we are leaving for work, we can’t be sure we will return safely. My wife takes care of our daughters and manages the household, knowing that I might not come back on time or even at all. This phrase captures the reality of a firefighter’s life and the sacrifices our families make every day.

There have been times when I’ve had to leave in the middle of family gatherings, holidays, or even during our daughter’s school events because duty called. It’s never easy, but my family understands. They know that my job is to protect others, and they support me wholeheartedly. I am grateful for their understanding and their strength, which allows me to do my job with a clear mind.

A Thank You to My Family

To my wife, I want to say thank you. Thank you for being the one who keeps our family together, for understanding the demands of my job, and for always making sure I am safe to continue my work. Your support gives me the strength to face the risks of my job with confidence. You are my protector just as much as I am the protector of our community.

To my daughters, thank you for being patient with me when I have to leave suddenly. Your smiles and hugs give me the energy to keep going, even on the toughest days. I promise to always come back home to you, safe and sound.

Looking Forward

As I look back on my journey, I see that being a firefighter is more than just a job; it’s a calling. It’s about making a difference in people’s lives, leading with kindness and bravery, and being there when people need us most. The relationships we build—with our community, with our mentors, and with our families—are what keep us going. And as I continue to serve as the chief of the Subang Jaya fire station, I do so knowing I have the support of a loving family, a trusting community, and a dedicated team.

In honour of Malaysia’s upcoming National Day, I reflect on the importance of the protectors in our lives. Whether it’s the firefighters who rush into danger, the mentors who guide us, or the families who stand by us, we all have protectors who help us along our journey. I am proud to be part of a community that values these protectors and to collaborate with organizations like Dettol that share our commitment to safety and care.
